On June 3, 2025, the E15 news website published an interview with Jan Řehola, Director of the Institute for Gambling Regulation (IPRH), focusing on current issues in gambling regulation in the Czech Republic. In the interview, he highlights the growing share of illegal gambling, which is estimated to account for up to 30% of the market and attracts approximately 40% of players. According to him, this situation significantly affects public budgets, which lose more than CZK 2 billion annually as a result.
The interview also addresses the issue of blanket bans on land-based gambling venues, which, according to Jan Řehola, may lead to a shift of players outside the legally regulated environment. He also notes the growing role of the online sector, which now accounts for the majority of gambling-related tax revenue.
The IPRH Director further points out that the legal gambling sector has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, moving towards greater transparency and responsibility, while the issue of illegal gambling remains frequently overlooked.
